Sexual Abuse Prevention – Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children and Supplemental Training, Part 1
Over the last 7 years, the training itself was updated. Our name changed and we re-structured. Many changes have taken place. We now offer this training at the same minimum charge of $15.00 per person as we did when we started seven years ago.
As of this date, July 20, 2017, we have trained over 2000 people in Stewards of Children. The impact grows exponentially as the training progresses. Darkness to Light states that for every adult trained, at least 10 children are better protected. Here is Darkness to Light’s description of the Stewards of Children Training:
“Child sexual abuse is an adult issue."
One in 10 children in the U.S. will be sexually abused before the age of 18. Darkness to Light believes that adults are responsible for the safety of children and that adults should be taking proactive steps to protect children from sexual abuse. It is unrealistic to think that a child should be responsible for fending off sexual advances by an adult.
PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM SEXUAL ABUSE
The 5 Steps to Protecting Our Children™ is an introductory guide to help adults protect children from sexual abuse. Using an evidence-informed approach, these guidelines provide simple and practical actions you can take to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Together, they form the framework for Darkness to Light’s prevention training program, Stewards of Children®.”
Each training is 2 hours long, depending on discussion, although we make a concerted effort to recognize the value of everyone’s time but want to give each participant time to respond to questions. We have 10 trained Facilitators funded and/or trained by Prevent Child Abuse Gaston – they include: Dottie Z. Scher, Jill Pegram, Diane Henderson, Celeste Quinn, Kim Leppert, Belinda Bogle, Sherry Murphy, Julie Murphy, Maya Feemster-Jones and Stephanie Macpherson. Three of these facilitators are now facilitating training for another organization. Jill, Diane, Celeste, Maya, Stephanie and I are available to facilitate training for Prevent Child Abuse Gaston. We have trained therapists, school teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, police officers, school administrators, city councilmen, township commissioners, state representatives, state senators, parents, clients in substance abuse recovery, clients in therapy for sexual abuse, court ordered placement providers for children in foster care, our staff, our volunteers, nurses, judges, attorneys, district attorneys, daycare providers, church staff, family advocates, guardian ad litem volunteers and more. This program is a critical part of the education we provide to the community. And we have people referred to us from all over the state every week,
We present the training on a regular basis, with pre-planned schedules at the Remount Executive Center, Gastonia, NC and Shady Grove Baptist Church, Cherryville, NC. We also offer to bring this training to your location, schedule permitting. This education is our purpose, our passion and our mission.
